Riverwall set for Tai O
*
Chief Executive Donald Tsang
Site visit: Chief Executive Donald Tsang visits Tai O to see the impact of Typhoon Koppu on residents.
*

The risk of flooding in Wing On Street, Tai O, during high tides in average meteorological conditions will be alleviated upon the completion of a riverwall, Chief Executive Donald Tsang says.

Visiting Tai O this afternoon he said a feasibility study for the project has been completed. Subject to lawmakers' funding approval, construction will start in the second half of 2010 for completion in 2011.

Mr Tsang visited homes and shops to see the impact of Typhoon Koppu on Tai O residents. He was also briefed on the assistance offered to residents which included the issue of a real time flood alert and the activation of an emergency command centre to co-ordinate evacuation, rescue and emergency relief efforts.

He said the damage inflicted by Koppu was less serious than Typhoon Hagupit which struck last September.

"I am most happy to see Tai O residents have found the alert system useful, and they are satisfied with the assistance offered by various government departments as well as the Tai O Rural Committee," he added.
