Elderly commission backs Budget measures
*

The Elderly Commission welcomes the Budget's holistic approach to provide support services to the elderly through cross-bureau collaboration.

At a meeting today, commission members supported the Government's innovative measures to foster the elderly's well-being amid the financial crisis.

A series of projects, the "Neighbourhood Active Ageing Project - Prevention of Elderly Suicide", will be launched in the next financial year.

The projects will enhance community efforts to prevent elderly suicide. A total of 33 district projects will be rolled out in April, bringing the total number of neighbourhood district projects to 75.

The commission also welcomed the Budget's initiative to set up a dedicated portal for the elderly.

The Citizen Home Safety Association's Personal Emergency Link Service and Hong Kong Housing Society each run a webpage on elderly services. It will be a breakthrough for the two website providers in Hong Kong to work together and set up a new portal.

The commission will also invite school sponsoring bodies and the welfare sector to set up more elder academies.
