The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a necrotising fasciitis case, also known as flesh-eating disease, involving a 52-year-old Tsing Yi man.
His left index finger swelled after being cut by broken glass at work on November 24. He sought treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital the same day and was admitted November 28. He is now stable.
Vibrio vulnificus, a type of bacteria causing necrotising fasciitis, was found in the wound.
Necrotising fasciitis is a serious bacterial infection of the soft tissue and fascia. It can destroy tissue and can cause death 12 to 24 hours after infection.
