*
Centre for Health Protection

An 11-year-old boy admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital April 17 with convulsions and a fever died today. The Centre for Health Protection said there is no evidence so far he had influenza and the Coroner's Court will investigate the case.

He tested negative for influenza-A and B, parainfluenza, adenovirus and respiratory syncytial virus. The centre's staff visited have visited his school to offer health advice. So far no influenza outbreak has been reported in the school.

Today saw no report under the influenza surveillance arrangement set up by the centre with hospitals. Of the 31 cases reported under the arrangement since March 13, 10 cases have laboratory evidence of influenza, with nine patients discharged and one still admitted in stable condition.

The remaining 21 cases, including the boy, have tested negative in preliminary influenza tests, with 15 patients discharged and five hospitalised.

The centre today received two flu-like illness outbreak reports involving four SAHK Wo Che Hostel & Recreation Centre residents, including three men and a woman aged 46 to 57, and six Ta Ku Ling Ling Ying Public School students, including four boys and two girls aged seven to nine. The former case has been confirmed Influenza-B related.
