230kg of illicit meat seized

Customs officers intercepted 51 travellers bringing meat into Hong Kong illegally at boundary checkpoints from March 20 to 27. They seized and destroyed 230kg of meat.

 

The Customs & Excise and Food & Environmental Hygiene Departments have enhanced enforcement against travellers bringing meat into Hong Kong to reduce the risk of avian flu outbreaks.

 

Bringing meat into Hong Kong without an official certificate warrants six months' jail and a $50,000 fine.
