Human H5N1 case in Shanwei confirmed
*
Centre for Health Protection

The Ministry of Health has confirmed the woman who recently died in Shanwei possibly due to avian influenza, has tested positive for H5N1.

The 44-year-old came down with a fever and pneumonia February 16 and died February 25.

The centre will maintain close liaison with the Guangdong Department of Health and the Ministry of Health to follow up the situation.

People should remain vigilant against avian influenza infection and avoid direct contact with poultry and birds or their droppings. Wash hands frequently.

Poultry and eggs should be thoroughly cooked before eating. Wear a mask when you have respiratory symptoms or need to care for patients with a fever. If you have a fever and influenza-like illness upon return to Hong Kong you should consult a doctor promptly and reveal your travel history.
