Medical reform consultation to start soon

Chief Executive Donald Tsang
Healthy overhaul: Chief Executive Donald Tsang says medical reform will allow flexible use of resources and help promote public health.
*

Chief Executive Donald Tsang says the medical reform consultation will launch soon, adding the Government will ensure the public has plenty of opportunity to discuss reform and financing proposals.

Opening Pok Oi Hospital's new building today, Mr Tsang said he hoped the community can reach a consensus on the issue so the Government can take Hong Kong a step forward in medical reform.

Noting the healthcare sector is facing great challenges, including the aging population and rising operation costs, the Chief Executive said reform will allow flexible use of resources and help promote public health.

Public participation is essential to the reform's success, Mr Tsang noted, adding the Government will work closely with the community to find the best medical system which can cater for Hong Kong's future needs and meet public aspirations.

He attached great importance to the rising demand for healthcare services and facilities in the New Territories West and said the Government plans to build a new hospital in Tin Shui Wai and has begun preliminary preparation work.
