Nutritional cooking workshop for chefs
Healthy treats: A dietitian explains children's nutritional requirements at a workshop for chefs.
*

The Department of Health has organised a nutritional cooking workshop to teach chefs to prepare healthy student  lunchboxes.

Participants can gain a better understanding of the nutritional requirements of children aged six to 12, and learn how to develop and modify healthy lunchbox recipes through the workshop.

A total of 60 participants from 23 school lunch suppliers and canteens attended the workshop.

The department's research suggests the obesity rate for primary school students has increased from 19.4% in 2005-06, to 20.2% in the 2006-07 school year.

The department said a balanced school lunch can help to prevent diseases including obesity. It is key for chefs to know how to prepare tasty and healthy meals, for children to develop a healthy eating habit.

To help parents acquire knowledge and skills about nutrition, a series of publicity programmes will be launched in January. The department has also recently revised the "Nutritional Guidelines on School Lunch for Primary School Students", setting a benchmark for the nutritional quality of children's lunches.
