Malachite green found in mud carp
*
Centre for Food Safety Department

A mud carp sample has been found to contain a trace amount of malachite green, the Centre for Food Safety says.

The centre recently collected 16 freshwater fish samples from the Cheung Sha Wan and Western Wholesale Food Markets for tests for malachite green, nitrofurans and chloramphenicol. Apart from the mud carp sample, the others were all satisfactory.

The Centre has notified the Guangdong Entry-Exit Inspection & Quarantine Bureau of the test results and the situation. Mainland authorities will take follow-up action, investigating whether a fish load from non-registered farms had been mixed with those from registered farms.

Officials from the two places will meet later this week to discuss measures to enhance regulation of Mainland freshwater fish supplied to Hong Kong.
