The Tobacco Control Office is following up on 42 complaints of smoking offences in new statutory no-smoking areas on January 1 and 2, the Department of Health says.
The office's hotline 2961 8823 handled about 100 calls today, while the smoking cessation hotline received 40 enquiries.
People in charge of establishments qualified for deferring the smoking ban to July 1, 2009, must display prominently signs prescribing requirements set out under the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance. At each entrance a sign saying that no person under 18 is permitted to enter, should to be displayed.
A designated mahjong room in a qualified club should carry a sign saying "This is a designated mahjong room in a qualified club that has been included in the list of qualified establishments maintained under the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance. The smoking ban will apply to this room from July 1, 2009". The sign should be shown in a prominent position at the entrance of each designated mahjong room in the club.
For other qualified establishments, the sign should read "This establishment has been included in the list of qualified establishments maintained under the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance. The smoking ban will apply to an indoor area in this establishment from July 1, 2009."
Guidelines have been offered to people concerned. Samples of the signs are also available for collection from the office.
