Sudan dyes have been detected in three more hen eggs, acting Food Safety Centre Controller Dr Ho Yuk-yin says, adding that 11 freshwater grouper samples have been found with malachite green.
So far 147 eggs have been collected and the results of 70 samples announced, he said, with Sudan dyes detected in one duck and two hen eggs.
For the results of 55 egg samples available today, three hen eggs taken from shops in Fa Yuen Street and To Kwa Wan markets were found containing the chemical dye. The three shops concerned have surrendered 700 eggs for disposal.
Dr Ho said the level of Sudan dye found in the three samples would have very little impact on health. Noting the trade's concern on the source of eggs, the Genreal Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection & Quarantine on the Mainland is preparing a list of exporting companies for their reference.
Meanwhile, the centre is following up on 11 reports on the sale of "red yolk" eggs.
On freshwater grouper, Dr Ho said tests on 15 samples are underway. While all have been confirmed free of chloramphenicol, an antibotic, 11 have been found with malachite green. Although the level of malachite green found in the grouper is very low and unlikely to pose a health risk, the trade will stop selling the fish. The centre will also step up control measures and tests on freshwater fish.
