Acting Food Safety Centre Controller Dr Ho Yuk-yin says Sudan dye has been detected in a hen egg collected from Cheung Sha Wan Wholesale Food Market.
Dr Ho said the egg was selected from a batch of 10 boxes. Four have been sold while the rest have been surrendered to the Centre for Food Safety for disposal.
He said the egg contained a very minor amount of Sudan dyes, posing no significant risk of cancer. It was also proven to originate from Hunan. So far, the centre has tested 128 eggs.
The centre has confirmed with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection & Quarantine that the hen eggs in question were not sourced from the registered farms who have the permit to supply the products to Hong Kong. The administration has agreed to suspend the import of Hunan eggs temporarily.
Dr Ho noted as the both the hen egg and duck egg tainted with Sudan Dyes both carries "red yolk" label, the public should stay away from the eggs from Hunan or eggs with that label.
Meanwhile, the five Mainland turbot fish tested today were confirmed to contain residue of a banned antibiotic, but the amount was very minor.
