The Centre for Food Safety is seeking more information from Mainland authorities on findings that certain food items imported from Japan have been found to contain excessive levels of heavy metals.
The centre said, based on information available, the levels of heavy metals in the food items - namely arsenic in saury and cadmium in squid - are within legal limits under Hong Kong food regulations concerned.
Heavy metals, including arsenic, lead and cadmium, are covered under the centre's food surveillance programme. Relevant food samples will be collected and tested following the incident.
