The Centre for Health Protection has urged people to take precautionary measures against respiratory tract infections as Hong Kong enters the summer influenza season.
There has been an increase in flu-like illnesses in the last two weeks.
Influenza occurs in Hong Kong throughout the year, but usually peaks in February and March with a secondary rise during the summer.
To prevent the flu:
E build up good body immunity through proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;
E maintain good personal and environmental hygiene;
E wash hands after sneezing, coughing or cleaning the nose;
E maintain good ventilation; and,
E avoid crowded places with poor ventilation.
People, particularly young children, the elderly and those with chronic diseases, should wear facemasks and consult doctors for medical advice promptly if they develop flu-like symptoms.
