Public hospitals and clinics will implement a new avian influenza alert system on July 1 to replace the colour-coded one.
The Hospital Authority Board today endorsed the new system, which involves alert, serious and emergency response levels.
Chairman of the authority's Central Committee on Infectious Disease Dr Liu Shao-haei said the colour-coded system has been under review since its launch two years ago.
"The new mechanism will ensure the contingency plan will be implemented with greater efficiency and effectiveness. It will also provide the authority greater flexibility in implementing contingent measures to cope with the different levels of risk assessment."
Dr Liu said staff forums have been held in the seven hospital clusters to explain the new mechanism and corresponding measures to staff.
Notices will be posted at prominent places in hospitals to remind everyone of infection control measures and personal hygiene highlights.
