Dead Tuen Mun birds checked for avian flu

*
Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department

Preliminary testing of a chicken and a little egret found dead in Tuen Mun has indicated suspected avian influenza cases, the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department says.

The carcass of the chicken was collected together with two live chickens near a lamp post at Wu Tai Circuit on February 4.  The egret was collected near Lung Mun Oasis on February 3.

The Centre for Health Protection called on members of the public who might have left chickens at Wu Tai Circuit or who had close contact with chickens in the area to seek medical advice from the nearest public hospital as soon as possible if they develop respiratory symptoms.

They are also urged to call the Centre at 2575 1221 during office hours for follow-up health advice.

There are two commercial chicken farms nearby. No abnormal mortality or symptoms of avian flu was detected among the fowls there.

The public should observe good personal hygiene and avoid contact with wild birds and live poultry.
