Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Pak-yin has called on the public to maintain good personal hygiene as the Government gears up for the peak flu season in the coming months.
Speaking on a radio talk show today, Dr Leung said there are avian flu outbreaks in Europe and Southeast Asia. As migratory birds are flying north to south this time of year, there will be a higher chance of them carrying the H5N1 virus into Hong Hong.
While the Government has drawn up plans and guidelines for a flu pandemic, Dr Leung said the public should maintain good personal hygiene, such as washing hands and wearing surgical masks, to avoid contracting or spreading the disease. He cautioned that antiviral drugs should be regarded as treatment for infected patients and not a preventive measure.
Dr Leung said a communication mechanism with the Mainland has been established and local experts may be sent to better understand the situation there when needed.
The Guangdong health authority will meet with Hong Kong counterparts next week to assess the latest situation and exchange views on measures taken.
Dr Leung said if there is a flu pandemic, healthcare staff will be fully equipped and preventive measures implemented at control points.
