Mosquito index rises slightly
*
Food & Environmental Hygiene Department

The monthly ovitrap index, showing the distribution of the Dengue fever mosquito vector, was 4.4% in September, up 3.5% on August.

Of the 38 locations surveyed, 32 recorded positively, but only four were above 10% - Tung Chung (22.9%), Wong Tai Sin Central (11.7%), Sham Shui Po East (11.5%) and Wan Chai North (10.2%).

Food & Environmental Hygiene Department Consultant Dr Ho Yuk-yin said although the monthly average ovitrap index remained low, there should be no slackening in prevention as the weather is still favourable for mosquito breeding.

Intensive inspections are being conducted, along with elimination of mosquito breeding sources and application of larvicides to potential breeding grounds.

21 imported cases

There have been 21 imported Dengue cases in Hong Kong this year.

Concerning the department's year-long Japanese encephalitis vectors survey, adult Culex tritaeniorhynchus were recently collected in Kowloon City. However, no virus was detected in the specimens.

The public should:

* scrub vases and pot-plant saucers at least once a week;

* properly dispose of containers;

* clear drains and surface channels to prevent blockage;

* remove stagnant water; and,

* fill all defective ground surfaces and drill large holes in unused tyres.

Travel advice

Travellers to Southeast Asia should:

* wear long-sleeved tops and trousers;

* use insect repellent over the exposed parts of the body;

* use mosquito screens or nets when rooms are not air-conditioned; and,

* seek medical advice if feeling unwell.

The ovitrap indices and information on anti-mosquito measures are available on the department's website and through its hotline at 2868 0000.

Information on Dengue fever and JE is also available on the Centre for Health Protection website and its hotline 2833 0111.
