Regulation of fish-supply sources mooted
*

Permanent Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Carrie Yau says the Government is considering whether it should introduce law amendments stipulating that all fish traders must buy fish from registered fish farms or approved places.

Speaking on two radio talk shows this morning, Mrs Yau said while the proposal could further ensure food safety, residents would have fewer choices when buying fish.

The Government will consult the public before making any decision.

Noting Hong Kong is an international city, she said any changes in our fish-supplies policy will apply to all trading partners, including both the Mainland and other countries which are supplying fish to Hong Kong.

If the Government decides to introduce such law amendments, trade talks may be needed to explain the issue to Hong Kong's trading partners.

Mrs Yau hoped consumer confidence in freshwater fish can be restored in the wake of the malachite green scare, adding consumers can decide whether to eat freshwater fish or not after considering the Government's risk assessment.
