Laboratory technologists performing medical diagnosis tests without doctor referral are subject to inquiries and liable to disciplinary proceedings, the Department of Health says.
Responding to a press report today that some laboratories have been offering tests for diseases without referral, the department said it is concerned over such malpractices.
The code of practice stipulates no technologist can test for medical diagnosis and treatment without referral from a registered medical, dental or veterinary practitioner, or a person registered in respect of a medical clinic exempted under the Medical Clinics Ordinance.
From 2000 to July this year, the Medical Laboratory Technologists Board has received seven cases concerning technologist conduct. Two performed tests without referral - one having their name removed from the register for a month and the other reprimanded.
The department advised people to seek professional opinion from doctors before approaching laboratories.
