Car plate scheme income to aid the poor: Tang
*
Henry Tang
Benevolent bid: Acting Chief Executive Henry Tang said the net revenue generated from the Personalised Vehicle Registration Marks bidding scheme will be used to complement the Commission on Poverty's work.
*

An estimated additional revenue of $70 million a year generated from the Personalised Vehicle Registration Marks scheme will be dedicated to alleviating poverty, Acting Chief Executive Henry Tang says.

Speaking after the Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Day today, Mr Tang said alleviating poverty is not about giving out money, but many services targetting the poor will require additional resources.

The net revenue from the scheme will be used to complement the Commission on Poverty's work, he said.

3 districts to be targetted first

Mr Tang said the $70 million a year is just an estimate, adding it may end up to be higher because it is a fun bidding scheme that nurtures creativity and allows people to give a message to their loved ones in more ways than one.

Mr Tang said poverty alleviation work will be carried out on a district basis, starting with Kwun Tong, Sham Shui Po and Tin Shui Wai.

He said details will be worked out with people at the district level and hoped the work will start as soon as possible.
