The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed a food poisoning case involving four people who ate the leaves of spring beans on May 19.
They sought treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital on the same day. None required hospitalisation.
Investigations found the vegetable was contaminated with methamidophos. One of the patients bought the vegetables from a market in Foshan in Guangdong.
The centre has informed the Guangdong health authorities about the case.
To reduce food poisoning by pesticide-contaminated vegetables: * do not buy vegetables with a strange smell; * wash the vegetables thoroughly before cooking; * soak vegetables in clean water for one hour to allow pesticide to leach out; * blanch in boiling water and pour away the water used for blanching as it may contain dissolved pesticides; * cook thoroughly before consumption; and, * do not patronise unlicensed hawkers.
