An influenza outbreak at a village in Leizhou, Guangdong, is under close watch, Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr York Chow says.
The Guangdong Department of Health notified Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection yesterday about the outbreak involving about 280 people, mostly students. They developed mild symptoms like fever, cough and myalgia. None required hospitalisation, and preliminary tests indicate human influenza.
Guangdong authorities have taken measures, including disinfection and health education, to control the outbreak. Dr Chow said more information is being sought on the outbreak, including details of the virus.
Centre for Health Protecton Community Medicine Consultant Dr Thomas Tsang said April is within the high season for influenza in the province, and visitors should take precautions.
The centre will maintain close liaison with Guangdong authorities to monitor the situation.
