There were 295,847 social security assistance cases last month, up 0.1% on December, the Social Welfare Department says.
Cases involving people with low earnings rose 1.4% to 16,410 from 16,176 cases, while cases involving elderly increased 0.2%, to 150,052 from 149,821 .
However, the number of jobless receiving comprehensive social security assistance continued to fall, with 44,782 cases last month, down 1% on December. These cases represent 15.1% of the total, down from 15.3% in December.
