A total of 4.27 tonnes of rubbish have been collected in Tsim Sha Tsui and Shatin after the New Year celebrations, 32.3% less than a year earlier. A total of 15 verbal warnings and 19 fixed penalty tickets were served to litterbugs.
The Leisure & Cultural Services Department said from 6pm yesterday to 4.30am today, 1.7 tonnes of rubbish were collected at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre; 0.91 tonnes at the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, Avenue of Stars and UC Centenary Garden; and 1.66 tonnes at Shatin Park and Shatin Town Hall.
There were 61 verbal warnings given and one summons issued for illegal hawking. No public property was found vandalised with spray paint.
Last year, 2.5 tonnes and 1.11 tonnes of rubbish were collected at the Cultural Centre and Shatin Park areas, while 2.7 tonnes were collected from the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and UC Centenary Garden.
More litter bins were placed in Tsim Sha Tsui and Shatin to maintain cleanliness, and additional workers were deployed to clear rubbish and perform overnight cleaning duties.
