Elderly home under investigation

*
Social Welfare Department

The Social Welfare Department is investigating possible licence breaches by the Ho Man Tin elderly home recently affected by a gastroenteritis outbreak. Acting Director of Social Welfare Agnes Allcock said legal advice is also being sought on the matter.

The home's residents have agreed to move out of the facility. Of the 31 residents, 17 have moved to the Cheung Muk Tau Holiday Centre in Sai Kung, five to other elderly homes and seven are staying in hospitals (three for gastroenteritis symptoms and four for other illnesses). Two have opted to return home.

Mrs Allcock thanked the residents for their understanding and co-operation.

"We will continue to take care of the well-being of the elders who have left the home and provide all necessary assistance to them and their families," she said.

The department will step up inspection and enforcement action to prevent a recurrence of the incident, and will submit a detailed report to the Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food shortly.
