2 more imported Dengue cases confirmed
*
Department of Health

The Department of Health confirmed today two more imported cases of Dengue fever, which involved a 10-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman.

So far, 14 Dengue fever cases have been reported in Hong Kong - all imported.

The boy had visited a Southeast Asian country on June 22 last year. He returned to Hong Kong on May 28, 2004.

He developed fever, tiredness and a rash on May 24 and was admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital in stable condition.

The second patient traveled to a Southeast Asian country on May 14 and returned to Hong Kong on May 30.

She developed headache, fever and muscle pain on May 28.

She is now receiving treatment in Princess Margaret Hospital in stable condition.

Stay alert to threat of Dengue fever

The department called on the public to stay alert to the threat of Dengue fever.

To avoid mosquito bites:

* Put all used cans and bottles into dustbins with covers;

* Change water for plants at least once a week, leaving no water in the saucers underneath flower pots;

* Cover tightly all water containers, wells and water storage tanks; and

* Keep all drains free from blockage.

Travellers should take the following preventive measures:

* Wear long-sleeved tops and trousers;

* Use insect repellent over the exposed parts of the body; and

* Use mosquito screens or nets when rooms are not air-conditioned.

Anyone feeling unwell after returning from their trip should consult a doctor as soon as possible and provide details of their travel to the doctor.

The latest information on Dengue fever in other places can be found under "Outbreak News" on the department's Hong Kong Travellers' Health Service website.

Travel agents, tour guides and travellers can visit the website for the latest news and advice on preventive measures.
