In view of the recent Dengue fever upsurge in Indonesia, the Department of Health calls on people, particularly travellers, to take all precautions to guard against the disease.
The six Dengue fever cases confirmed in Hong Kong so far this year have all been imported. In 2002, 24 imported cases and 20 local cases were recorded while last year saw 48 imported cases and one local.
As Dengue fever is an endemic disease in Southeast Asian countries, the department said the best prevention is to avoid mosquito bites by:
* wearing long-sleeved tops and trousers;
* using insect repellent over the exposed parts of the body; and,
* using mosquito screens or nets when rooms are not air-conditioned.
Anyone feeling unwell after returning from their trip should consult a doctor as soon as possible and provide details of their travel.
People can also refer to the department's HK Travellers' Health Service website to get the latest information on infectious diseases like Dengue fever, in other places.
The department warned we are still under the potential threat of Dengue fever. As there is no effective vaccine against the disease, the best way to guard against it is to stay vigilant and remove stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed.
