21 people down with gastroenteritis
*

The Department of Health has confirmed reports of gastroenteritis outbreaks in two institutions affecting 21 people.

They all showed symptoms of vomiting, abdominal pain, fever and diarrhoea and stool sample results are pending.

The outbreaks affected seven students and one staff member at the Salvation Army Lai Chi Kok Nursery in Sham Shui Po; and 13 students at the Church of Christ in China Heep Woh Primary School in Yau Tsim Mong.

Two more schools off the list

The department removed Wisely Nursery and Kindergarten and La Salle Primary School from the list as the schools' disease-surveillance periods have ended.

The department is closely monitoring the situation of viral gastroenteritis caused by Norwalk-like virus, as Hong Kong enters the high season for the disease.

Its hotline, 2961 8966, had received 339 public requests  for information on the disease and preventive measures.

The department stressed the importance of personal, food and environmental hygiene in preventing gastroenteritis outbreaks in institutional settings.
