8 Lai King patients show flu A signs

*
Department of Health

Laboratory tests by the Department of Health show eight patients from a Lai King hostel have Influenza A.

Tests conducted on all 18 patients have so far not shown signs of SARS.

As Hong Kong has entered the peak season for flu - July and August - the public should take precautions, Department of Health Consultant Dr Thomas Tsang said.

He made the plea following a number of influenza-like-illness cases among the residents of the hostel.

There have been no new admissions to the hospital from the hostel this morning. As of yesterday, 18 patients were admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital.

The department is conducting medical surveillance on the hostel and giving health advice.

Dr Tsang said flu tends to be more active in summer months, especially in July and August, apart from the usual peak season from January through March.

The department's surveillance programme on influenza-like-illness indicates that the consultation rate for flu-like illness has picked up since June.

"Members of the public are advised to be on guard against influenza and other respiratory illnesses," he said.

Flu prevention measures

To prevent flu people should:

* Build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;

* Maintain good personal hygiene, and wash hands after sneezing, coughing or cleaning the nose;

* Maintain good ventilation; and,

* Avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation.

People, particularly the young, elderly and those with chronic diseases, should consult their doctor for medical advice promptly if they develop flu-like symptoms.
