An extraordinary exhibit, "Climate is changing, act now!", at the HSBC Main Building's ground floor plaza in Central aims to enhance visitors' understanding of climate change - its causes, impacts, and what ordinary people can do to help mitigate it.
It issues a timely call for people to use less gift wrapping during the Christmas and Lunar New Year periods. Manufacturing this paper uses a lot of trees and fuel, and its disposal and treatment also consumes extra resources - releasing carbon dioxide and exacerbating the greenhouse effect.
To encourage people to forego the tradition, organisers are giving away "Say No to Wrapping Paper" gift stickers - to put on gifts instead of wrapping them.
The Hong Kong Observatory, the Guangdong Meteorological Bureau, the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau and the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd. jointly organised the exhibition - marking the first time the three weather services have co-operated to stage such an event.
The exhibition will run until December 28 before travelling to Guangdong and Macau in 2009.
