Tamar dioxin levels within international limits
*
Sarah Liao

Tamar talk: Secretary for the Environment, Transport & Works Dr Sarah Liao rebuts dioxin rumours.

*

All government tests have shown the level of dioxin at the Tamar site and in Victoria Harbour is 30 to 50 times lower than the international standard, Secretary for the Environment, Transport & Works Dr Sarah Liao says.

Responding to a study on the dioxin levels today, Dr Liao said the report does not contain figures or analysis showing the dioxin level in the area is three times higher than the international standard.

Noting the Tamar site has not been used as a shipyard, nor for heavy industry or incineration, Dr Liao said there is no cause for alarm. The Government has been monitoring dioxin levels regularly and tests will not be conducted because of rumours.

Transport action

Meanwhile, when asked about labour action to be taken by Citybus and New World First Bus drivers next week, Dr Liao said discussions with the bus companies on staff salaries are ongoing. She hopes the actions will not affect commuters.
