July saw 17 convictions recorded for breaches of anti-pollution legislation the Environmental Protection Department enforces.

Seven of the convictions were under the Air Pollution Control Ordinance, four under the Noise Control Ordinance, four under the Waste Disposal Ordinance and two under the Water Pollution Control Ordinance.

The heaviest fine was $18,000, assessed against a company for using powered mechanical equipment not in accordance with permit conditions.
