Rain, landslips cause havoc on HK roads

*

Hong Kong is still under the impact of unsettled weather with more than 50mm of rain recorded in the northern part of the New Territories this morning.

The landslip warning issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 9pm yesterday was still in force at 11pm today.

Six temporary shelters remain open for those in need. About 100 people have made use of the shelters. The Home Affairs Department's enquiry hotline had received 351 calls by mid-afternon.

At 8am today, the Geotechnical & Engineering Office of the Civil Engineering & Development Department had received 98 incident reports and had inspected the slopes involved.

The Drainage Services Department received 33 flooding reports and inspected the locations to help facilitate the flow of drainage.

The Transport Department said landslips have closed some roads on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.

The closure of Tung Chung Road and some sections of Route Twisk would remain at least for the coming one or two days and residents were advised to plan for their journeys and to use alternative routes.

Commissioner for Transport Alan Wong this afternoon inspected some of the road sections affected by landslips at Route Twisk, Tsuen Wan.

At 11pm, South Lantau Road near Tong Fuk and Tung Chung Road near Shek Mun Gap remained closed to all traffic. New Lantau Bus route No. 1 could only provide limited services between Mui Wo and Cheung Sha, and between Tong Fuk and Tai O.

Addition sailings for Lantau commuters

New World First Ferry will operate 10 additional sailings between Tung Chung and Tai O tomorrow. Ferry services between Mui Wo and Nim Shue Wan and a special shuttle bus service between Nim Shue Wan and Discovery Bay Ferry Pier will continue to operate. Tuen Mun-Tung Chung-Sha Lo Wan-Tai O ferry services will continue to operate tomorrow.

GMB No. 80, which was affected due to a landslide at Route Twisk yesterday, has been running between Tsuen Wan (Chuen Lung Street) and Route Twisk (Kwong Pan Tin Chuen) since 7.45pm. Residents of The Cliveden can walk to Kwong Pan Tin Chuen to take the GMB service to/from Tsuen Wan.

Sections of Victoria Road near Sandy Bay Road and Mount Davis Path are open only to one-lane, two-way traffic tonight.

One-lane, two-way traffic has been implemented on Tai Hang Road between Mount Butler Road and Broadwood Road due to a landslide. Tai Hang Drive was reopened to all traffic from about 3.45pm today.

While relevant works departments are still working hard to clear the landslides, progress has been affected by the unstable slope conditions and poor weather. It is expected that road closures will continue for some time.

The department will continue to monitor the traffic situation closely.
