A 20-tonne batch of dioxin-containing residues has been successfully transported from To Kau Wan in Lantau to the Chemical Waste Treatment Centre in Tsing Yi for incineration in the next few days.
The Civil Engineering & Development Department said the residues were delivered to the treatment centre early this morning following a designated route the Director of Environmental Protection approved under the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance.
The department said the operation had been smooth with no untoward incidents, stressing stringent precautionary measures had been adopted throughout the transportation exercise.
Since the trial incineration of about 10 tonnes of dioxin-containing residues on November 26 complied with all stipulated requirements, the Director of Environmental Protection granted approval for the incineration of the remaining residues.
Incineration safe, effective
About 22 tonnes of residues were transported from To Kau Wan to the centre on January 4 for incineration from January 5 to 9.
The outcome of extensive monitoring indicated that incineration is both a safe and effective way to dispose of dioxin-containing residues, the department said.
It will continue to take steps to monitor the incineration process in the next few days, and relevant data will be posted from time to time on the department's website.
