Caution urged in green law revision

*

The proposal to require developers to obtain permits for demolition works by amending the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance may affect many projects and needs careful consideration, Secretary for the Environment, Transport & Works Dr Sarah Liao says.

She said the ordinance does not require developers to obtain permits for demolition works. However, the Government is studying the law to see if it can be applied to the demolition of Hunghom Peninsula.

The developers have been asked to submit a comprehensive waste management plan to explain how they can mitigate noise and air pollution during the demolition. The works also have to comply with the Noise and Air Pollution Control Ordinances.

The Environmental Protection Department and the Advisory Council on the Environment will monitor the issue.

On requests to amend the ordinance to cover demolition works, Dr Liao said the move may affect many such projects, adding that thorough consultation is needed before deciding the way forward.
