The Mega Events Fund Assessment Committee will inject $25.2 million to support six major arts, cultural and sports events, including the world-class sailing extravaganza the Louis Vuitton Hong Kong Trophy next October.
Announcing the selection results today, committee chairman Jeffrey Lam said the sponsorship for each project ranges from $800,000 to $10 million, adding all projects selected will add colour and vibrancy to Hong Kong and attract more visitors to the city.
The other five selected events are the Swire Symphony Under the Stars, the Hong Kong Tennis Classic 2010 World Team Challenge, the Mui Wo Lantern Festival, the 2010 International a cappella Festival and the Hong Kong Musical Festival. Click here for details.
"These mega events will enrich the travel experience of visitors, raise Hong Kong's profile internationally, showcase our capability to host world-class events and reinforce our position as the events capital of Asia," Mr Lam said.
"The events will also help generate economic benefits by boosting consumption and creating job opportunities in various sectors, and promote development in the arts, cultural and sports sectors." He said the six events will attract 140,000 participants, both locals and tourists.
He said 19 applications received in the first round of the $100 million fund were meticulously scrutinised by the committee in accordance with a marking scheme which takes into account factors such as the economic, publicity and other benefits of the events, the scale of the events, the capability and track record of the applicants, the technical feasibility of the proposals, and the reasonableness of the budget.
The second-round of applications will run November 1 to noon November 30. Application details will be available on the fund's website from October 31.
