John Tsang hails revised EU offer
*

Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology John Tsang has hailed the European Union's revised offer in the WTO negotiation on agriculture as a "step forward".

Speaking on a radio talk show today, Mr Tsang said the offer has shown EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson's efforts, and urged all WTO members to show flexibility, political will and leadership to formulate a credible package. If members can reach a consensus on agriculture, discussions on other items can go on.

Noting the Doha Development Agenda aims to help developing countries, Mr Tsang said he visited several recently to better understand their situation. He said being the 6th Ministerial Conference chairman, he will be fair and just in negotiations, adding that any agreements reached in the Doha Development Agenda will help broaden the international trade platform. Hong Kong will also reap the benefits if agreements are reached on services and tariffs.

When asked about communication with non-government organisations, Mr Tsang said on-going discussions are being held to understand their needs. As MC6 will be the first to house the centre for NGOs under the same roof as the conference proper, Mr Tsang said the move will boost exchange and understanding between WTO members and NGOs.
