May container throughput up 1.8%

Container port
Busy port: Kwai Tsing Container Terminals handled 64% of the total container throughput in May.

Hong Kong container ports handled a total of 1,866,000 containers in May, up 1.8% over a year earlier. Taking the first five months of this year together, the container throughput went up 0.8%, to 8,846,000 containers.

 

The Port Development Council said the Kwai Tsing Container Terminals recorded a throughput of 1,186,000 containers last month, a 4.9% increase over a year earlier. Nevertheless, the throughput of other terminals went down 3.2%, to 680,000 containers.

 

Taking the first five months together, the throughput of Kwai Tsing Container Terminals went up 11.3% over the same period last year, with 5,632,000 containers handled. Other terminals, however, recorded a 13.6% decline, with a throughput of 3,214,000 containers.

 

Comparing with the April figures, the number of containers the Kwai Tsing Container Terminals handled in May grew about 1.5%, while other terminals saw a rise of 0.3%.
