The Government will apply for funding from the Legislative Council Finance Committee tomorrow for 20 works projects worth $12.6 billion, creating about 15,000 jobs.
One of them is Operation Building Bright, a $1 billion project which will create 10,000 jobs for maintenance workers. The Government will put up $700 million, while the Urban Renewal Authority and Housing Society will each cover $150 million.
Nine tertiary education institution projects, worth $6.532 billion, will create 2,506 jobs. They are:
* Polytechnic University's phase 8 development;
* Centennial Campus phase 1 & 2 of the University of Hong Kong;
* the University of Science & Technology's new academic building and the Institute for Advanced Study;
* Chinese University's centralised general research laboratory complex (block 1) and two integrated teaching buildings;
* City University's academic and administration building; and
* Lingnan University's new academic block and student hostel.
The Government has proposed upgrading the improvement works for Mong Kok Stadium. This will cost about $275.5 million and create 210 jobs.
It has also recommended a $988.3 million increase in the 2009-10 allocations for six works-related block allocations under the Capital Works Reserve Fund, from a total of $4.243 billion, creating 1,600 jobs.
Infrastructure upgrades
Other projects to be considered by the Finance Committee include:
* road improvement works associated with the proposed re-alignment of Ngau Tau Kok Fourth Street and Fifth Street and construction of nearby footbridge links (92 jobs to be created);
* North District and Tolo Harbour sewerage, sewage treatment and disposal upgrade (305 jobs);
* consultants' fees and site investigation for a planning and engineering study on the development of Lok Ma Chau Loop (25 jobs);
* infrastructure works for Tseung Kwan O stage I landfill site (103 jobs);
* widening of Tsuen Wan Road between Tsuen Tsing Interchange and Kwai Tsing Interchange and associated junction improvement works (42 jobs);
* reconstruction and improvement of Tuen Mun Road (20 jobs);
* retrofitting noise barriers on Fanling Highway, from the MTR Fanling Station to Wo Hing Road (184 jobs); and
* retrofitting noise barriers on Fanling Highway from Po Shek Wu Road to the MTR Fanling Station (371 jobs).
