Chief Executive Donald Tsang has applauded the 2008-09 Budget which he says helps underprivileged groups, returns wealth to the people and lays the foundation for Hong Kong's long-term development.
"Even though our economy is on a rising track, some in Hong Kong have yet to share the fruits of this recovery and prosperity. The Budget has outlined a number of initiatives to alleviate the problems encountered by underprivileged groups through promoting economic development, creating job opportunities and investing in education," he said after this morning's Budget speech.
The Budget proposes tax concessions and one-off relief measures that will benefit various community sectors, he added, stressing it is pragmatic and embodies the Government's commitment to helping those in need and fostering social harmony.
"These undertakings all honour the pledges in my election manifesto to leave wealth with the people," he said, adding he endorsed the initiatives to invest in the community and infrastructure, noting they will help Hong Kong face future challenges and lay a solid foundation for another decade.
Chief Secretary for Administration Henry Tang said the Budget is outstanding and will consolidate economic growth. He said the budget has responded to many calls from society and achieved the purpose of leaving wealth with the community.
He said the Budget has done a great deal for the disadvantaged and the needy, and the community will support it. He urged the Revenue Bills be passed as soon as possible so the measures can be implemented.
Executive Council non-official members convenor Leung Chun-ying said the Budget is comprehensive and benefits many community sectors. He said the council's non-official members fully support it and believes society will do the same.
