Donald Tsang mourns Ma Lik
*

Chief Executive Donald Tsang and other senior officials have expressed sadness at the death of Legislative Councillor Ma Lik.

"I visited Mr Ma two weeks ago. He was very concerned about Hong Kong even on his sick bed. I was deeply saddened to hear of his death," Mr Tsang said, adding that Mr Ma was a committed political leader with vision and a passion for Hong Kong and the motherland.

"He will be remembered for his distinguished service to the community, in particular his active involvement in the drafting and promotion of the Basic Law. He made a considerable contribution to the smooth transition of Hong Kong and the implementation of One Country, Two Systems.

"Mr Ma also promoted the development of local political parties. Under his leadership, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment & Progress of Hong Kong has become a close partner of the Government. The administration joins me in extending our deepest condolences to his family."

Hong Kong's loss

Chief Secretary for Administration Henry Tang said he deeply regretted the loss of an outstanding political leader.

"While courageously fighting against his illness, Mr Ma continued to lead the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment & Progress of Hong Kong and worked closely with the Government to promote Hong Kong's development."

Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Stephen Lam said the Guangdong Economic & Trade Office will contact his family to see whether any assistance can be offered.

Legislative Council President Rita Fan said Mr Ma's death is a grievous loss not only to the council but also Hong Kong. His dedication, frankness and competence earned people's respect and recognition, she added.
