Secretary for Constitutional Affairs Stephen Lam has expressed his sadness over the death of National People's Congress Hong Kong deputy Dr Raymond Wu. He died in Queen May Hospital today.

Offering his deepest condolences to Dr Wu's family, Mr Lam said he made great contributions to the drafting of the Basic Law, the implementation of One Country, Two Systems, and the preparation for the Handover in 1997.

Central Policy Unit Head Professor Lau Siu-kai also expressed his sorrow at Dr Wu's death. Noting it is a great loss to Hong Kong, Professor Lau said his views helped inspire public discussion on political issues.

Dr Wu had served in various official capacities for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Hospital Authority from 1997 to 2005 and Chairman of the Community Investment & Inclusion Fund Committee since its establishment in 2002.

Before the Handover, Dr Wu had been a member of the Basic Law Drafting Committee, the Basic Law Consultative Committee and the Preparatory Committee for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Since then, he had been a member of the Basic Law Committee. He was also a deputy to the 9th and 10th National People's Congress.
