The Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee and Government departments are organising promotional activities to commemorate the 7th anniversary of the Basic Law implementation.

One of the key commemorative activities is the recent TV Quiz on the Basic Law. Highlights will be broadcast on ATV, Cable TV, TVB, RTHK Radio 1 and RTHK's website on July 25.

The Home Affairs Bureau is organising with the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education and the Peninsula Junior Chamber the Basic Law Public Speaking Contest and other activities from July to November to enhance people's awareness of the Basic Law, particularly youngsters.

Five winning teams of the Basic Law Promotion Day Competition, jointly organised by the Constitutional Affairs and Education & Manpower Bureaux, were awarded a trip to Beijing in August. Their schools will stage the Basic Law Promotion Day on campus in October to implement their winning proposals.

The Constitutional Affairs Bureau will also launch a web game on the Basic Law website this month.

Student activities to enhance national identity

The Education & Manpower Bureau has been organising the Award Scheme for Student Leaders: National Education Course for secondary six student prefects to take up courses in Beijing, which will strengthen students' understanding of the current developments of the Mainland and their national identity.

The first course was launched earlier this month with the participation of 170 students and 17 principals.

To achieve similar objectives, the bureau is also organising the Journey to China Study Tour Project through which grants are given to eight secondary schools and 10 primary schools for arranging visits and study programmes on the Mainland.

Exhibitions, community activities to foster public involvement

The Home Affairs Department has invited 18 District Councils to organise a National Day Bunting Design Competition in July and August to celebrate the People's Republic of China��s 55th anniversary.

The winning designs of each district will be used for producing buntings to be mounted at lamp posts along major roads in mid-September.

Other programmes include a roving exhibition on the National Flag, Emblem and Anthem of the PRC, which will be staged in large shopping malls and Government buildings in 18 districts until August.

A roving exhibition on the implementation of the Basic Law will be held in public libraries from October.

An exhibition on Deng Xiaoping and the Basic Law at the Museum of History run until October.

Apart from a booklet on selected reading materials on the Basic Law published by the Home Affairs Bureau and the Leisure & Cultural Services Department, the Constitutional Affairs Bureau also plans to publish a booklet on the implementation of the Basic Law in Hong Kong.

In addition to a seminar to mark the Basic Law��s 7th anniversary, the Civil Service Training & Development Institute has also launched an online quiz to enhance the law��s understanding among civil servants.
