Democrats' views to reach Central authorities: CE

*
CE meets Yeung Sum
Frank exchange: Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa meets Democratic Party leader Yeung Sum and other lawmakers today.
*

Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa says he will pass the democratic legislators' views to the Central authorities.

He also urges Hong Kong people to take forward the city's constitutional reform practically so as to achieve the ultimate goal - universal suffrage.

Mr Tung met with Democratic Party leader Yeung Sum and other lawmakers today to exchange views on issues of concern.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Mr Tung said he is fully aware of democrats' disappointment with the National People's Congress Standing Committee's decision on selecting the Chief Executive and for forming the Legislative Council.

While he does not have the authority to ask the Standing Committee members to change their minds, Mr Tung has pledged to reflect democrats' views to the Central authorities.

The Government will launch a range of activities to promote public participation in the city's political reform. Mr Tung called on people to partake in the activities and develop a proposal that complies with the Basic Law and the Standing Committee's decision.

He also noted democracy is what Hong Kong people aspire to, and appealed to the public to work together to achieve the target of universal suffrage.
