More exchanges, less confrontation: CE

*

All sectors of the community, including democrats, should strengthen communication and avoid confrontation so as to build a harmonious society and boost ties with the Central Authorities, Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa says.

Responding to lawmaker Lau Chin-shek's call for a conciliatory approach towards the Central Authorities, Mr Tung said he has been advocating the need to step up exchanges since he took up his post seven years ago. This is a good start, he said, adding that a good relationship should be built on the basis of mutual trust and respect. He will offer the democrats help in their communication with the Mainland if needed.

Mr Tung stressed he has been reflecting Hong Kong's actual situation to the Central Authorities, and they have assured the city's call for democracy. He pledged the Government will continue exchanges with all sectors to boost ties and achieve the target of universal suffrage in an orderly, progressive manner.

On the upcoming Legislative Council elections, Mr Tung said it is important to maintain a good relationship between the government and the legislature. This is what Hong Kong people aspire for, and it will benefit the whole community, he said.

Commenting on former Chief Secretary for Administration Anson Chan's remarks that Hong Kong needs good governance, Mr Tung said he is also highly concerned with the issue of good governance as well as the city's core values. He said core values such as the rule of law, freedoms and liberties, fairness and honesty reflect a city's strength, and the Government remains steadfast in upholding these.
