Professionalism praised: Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee (fifth, left) with the commended Government Flying Service officers.

Seven Government Flying Service officers have been commended by the Chief Executive on their successful completion of a four-month operational exchange with the Rescue & Salvage Bureau of the Ministry of Communications in Dalian.

Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee today presented the commendation letters to Senior Air Crewman Jimmy Choi, Senior Pilot Michael Chan, Pilot Lawrence Wong, Aircraft Engineer Donny Chan, Air Crewman Edward Li, Senior Aircraft Technician Kan Chi-fai and Communications Officer Alan Lee.

A first with Mainland rescuers

This was Hong Kong's first exchange with Mainland maritime rescue authorities, and ran from November to March.

Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa said in the letters: "You brought your expertise and experience to the newly established rescue team at Dalian, helping to strengthen the training of rescue personnel on the Mainland and enhancing their overall search and rescue capabilities.

"I have noted with admiration that on January 16 you braved raging winds and storms to mount the rescue of four Mainland crew members from a burning oil tanker. Your professionalism, courage and dedication have won the praise and gratitude of Mainland authorities and the local community at Dalian."

Mr Tung said the exchange marked the beginning of fruitful co-operation in search and rescue work with the Mainland.
