US Gov't should not interfere in HK's affairs
*

The US Government should not interfere in Hong Kong's constitutional development which is part of China's internal matters, Secretary for Constitutional Affairs Stephen Lam says.

In response to the US-HK Policy Act Report and a statement by the US State Department, Mr Lam said the Government and the Central Authorities will handle the issue according to the Basic Law.

The Constitutional Affairs Bureau said it is well recognised that the One Country, Two Systems principal is working well in Hong Kong and people's rights and freedoms continue to be upheld.

The international community should have faith the Government will continue to run Hong Kong in strict accordance with the Basic Law, it added.

The National People's Congress Standing Committee's interpretations on Basic Law Annexes I & II will help Hong Kong resolve an important issue, and provide a firm foundation for the Government's next stage of work.

Noting the Central Authorities have powers and responsibilities on matters relating to Hong Kong's constitutional development, the bureau said the interpretation will help to clarify the views and put an end to disputes in the community.
