The Secretary for Constitutional Affairs says the Government will work with all political parties and newly elected District Councillors to help Hong Kong. Stephen Lam said parties and councillors will work to service the interests of the community.
"It is a cardinal principle of political party involvement in any community that the choices of the people are paramount," he said.
Noting the record high voter turnout, Mr Lam said the Government, candidates and political parties have done a lot to promote the election.
Political parties have associated themselves more closely with the public and attracted new blood into their ranks to better serve the community and to participate more actively in elections.
HK people willing to speak out
Mr Lam said Hong Kong people are now more accustomed to the electoral process and to expressing their views.
"Political events make politics", he said, adding the July 1 demonstration and the election are important political highlights of 2003.
On the resignation of Jasper Tsang as Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of HK chairman, Mr Lam said he respected the decision.
"It is a matter which all political leaders will need to bear in mind in terms of their involvement in public life."
