Director of Fire Services Lai Man-hin has expressed his sadness over the death of Senior Station Officer Thomas Cheung.
The officer sustained serious injuries while fighting a fire in an industrial centre in Ngau Tau Kok yesterday.
He was sent to United Christian Hospital in a coma and later died.
"I am profoundly grieved at the loss of this brave Senior Station Officer. All our colleagues are highly saddened by the loss of Mr Cheung. I have, on behalf of all our colleagues, offered the deepest condolences to Mr Cheung's family," Mr Lai said.
"Our Welfare Officer is closely liaising with Mr Cheung's family and will render our utmost assistance to help them through this sad and difficult time. The Fire Services Department will set up a funeral committee to make arrangements for Mr Cheung's funeral."
Aged 30, Mr Cheung joined the department in 2010 and was promoted to Senior Station Officer last year.
He is survived by his wife and a son.
Mr Lai wished the eight other firemen injured in the fire a speedy recovery.
Acting Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung and Secretary for the Civil Service Clement Cheung also expressed profound sadness over the officer's death.
Matthew Cheung said: "I hope that we will be able to render more support to the family as soon as possible and give recognition to Mr Cheung's bravery under the Financial Assistance Scheme for Family Members of Those Who Sacrifice Their Lives to Save Others."
Clement Cheung said: "On behalf of all civil servants, I pay solemn tribute to Mr Thomas Cheung and offer our deepest condolences to his family."
The Civil Service Bureau is liaising with the department and will help Officer Cheung's family.
